As a boarding student, I looked forward to Saturdays. That was the only day we were allowed to leave the campus to visit downtown and have a taste of freedom. Granted, we had a ping pong table as entertainment, but even ping pong lost its allure after countless hours of play time.
That was the case for me thirty years ago and in a different country. But, what does the dorm life look like on weekends and during the breaks in Atchison, KS?
Of course, we have a ping pong table. Actually, the mother of one of current our boarding students is the first female Chinese olympian. As you can imagine, he is a bit unrivaled at the moment.
Our boarding students can enjoy a quiet day in the dorm, hanging out with friends, cleaning, reading or playing games; or they can go to the gym for a workout and a quick basketball game; or they can visit the commercial street in our beautiful and safe town for a cup of coffee and a taste of gelato.
They can also sign up for one of our weekend trips where we explore the surrounding cities as we have fun, build strong friendships and do a little shopping. Some of our excursions from this year led us to mini golf, iceskating, movies, bowling, skiing, shopping and even an escape room.
